On March 13th, 2006, J. Keolalani Hanoa went to sit with her kupuna to guide us so we can continue her work towards what is pono for the preservation of the aina and the oiwi. On May 1st, 2007, Hawaii County Councilman Bob Jacobson introduced to the County Finance Committee RESOLUTION 169-07 and suggested it be known as the "Keolalani Hanoa Resolution” in her honor. The resolution calls for protection of the coastal areas and adjacent lands at Punalu`u utilizing the county's Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Fund. It follows the Mayor's
recommendation that Punalu‘u Beach Park and adjacent lands become the number two priority for purchase.

Born and raised in Ka`u, Keola was a kumu (teacher) to na kamali`i (the children) and to people from around the world, sharing the importance of protecting and restoring the land, culture and traditional lifestyle of Ka`u. You can help continue her legacy by supporting this historic resolution that would protect a priceless "living classroom" that is the basis for creating jobs in education, cultural studies, aquaculture and resource management for the people of Ka`u.

Introduced by councilman Bob Jacobson (Ka`u/Puna) the resolution is aimed at protecting 150 acres of the most critically important areas along the coast, "commencing at the certified shoreline and extending at least 2000 feet inland'"

The passing of the resolution at this time will allow for matching federal funds to be used for the acquisition, saving the county millions of dollars. U.S. Congresswoman Mazie Hirono has requested $3 million dollars for this purpose.

Once, purchased the property would be managed under the guidance and stewardship of the people of Ka`u who rely on the area for fishing, recreation and cultural practices. The passing of the KEOLALANI HANOA RESOLUTION is an important first step to protecting the entire ahupua`a of Punalu`u forever.

H.R. 6202: THE KA`U COASTAL PRESERVATION ACT

This historic bill directs the National Park Service to conduct a full feasibility study of the area as recommended in the reconnaissance survey. It does not create a national park, but provides invaluable research to determine the best methods in protecting Ka`u's coast. Ka`u Preservation supports this bill as it will help us demonstrate the importance of protecting the Ka`u coast. However we do not support creating a National Park. Instead we support local management for the entire coastline by and for the people of Ka`u. Congressman Abercrombie cosponsored the bill, which has been referred to the House Natural Resources Subcommittee.
